About / Renseignements

When one thinks of "Canadiana", most likely the first name that comes to mind is "C. Benson Antiques" in Port Hope, Ontario. Carol and Clay Benson have been in the antique business since 1968. Their first shop was called "Farrous Wheel Antiques" , and was located in Newcastle, Ontario. In 1971 C. Benson Antiques moved to Port Hope, Ontario and sold to dealers, collectors and museums from their home. Clay and Carol traveled and bought extensively throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces.

Clay and Carol BensonAfter the disastrous 1980 flood of downtown Port Hope, 27 Walton Street was scheduled for demolition. Clay and Carol's love of early Ontario buildings led to the purchase and renovation of the building. In 1985 they decided it was time for a main street location for their business. Their new store was named "Smith's Creek Antiques" after the original Loyalist settlement of 1792 in today's Port Hope.

Carol and Clay are long term CADA members and deal mainly in Canadian furniture, Canadian smalls, vintage guitars and a broad assortment of interesting antiques. Clay and Carol participate in many antique shows in Canada and the USA, including; the Old Montreal Antiques Show, Bowmanville Antique Show, Spring and Fall Christie Antique Show, "Cabin Fever" Show in Kingston and Hertan's Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts.

Smith's Creek Antiques is a large and fascinating store with an extensive collection of quality antiques. Clay and Carol's expertise and experience make buying antiques from Smith's Creek Antiques a very satisfying affair. The knowledge that every aspect of purchasing an antique, from the provenance to the condition, will be thoroughly explored by the Bensons, makes a trip to Port Hope and Smith's Creek Antiques a joy for anyone interested in quality antiques.
